5 Essential Tips for Freshmen in Architecture School
Starting architecture school is like stepping into an entirely new world—exciting yet undeniably challenging.
As someone who's been through the trenches, I can tell you it’s a rewarding journey but not without its hurdles.
Here are some tips to help you navigate your first year and set a solid foundation for your studies.
1. Be Strategic With Your Supplies
It’s tempting to splurge on every shiny new tool, but trust me, you don’t need them all. Start with essentials like a reliable scale, pencils, markers, and a drafting table.
Pay attention to what your professors and upperclassmen recommend—these are often better investments than what looks cool at the store.
As you progress, you’ll figure out what works best for your style. Keep it simple and build your toolkit as needed. Overbuying will only drain your wallet and clutter your workspace.
Materials I Recommend and Used
I used Staedtler for my pencils, triangles, and t-square (tip: you don’t need so many grades of pencils). While I went with Kure colors for my markers, Prisma is an amazing set of colored pencils I also used.
2. Learn Time Management (or Self-Management)
The Architecture course comes with A LOT of deadlines. Plate submissions, model projects, and regular coursework can quickly pile up.
Try to master your schedule early on. Use digital tools to block off time for classes, assignments, and rest. Color-coding tasks can help you stay organized and ensure you aren’t sacrificing sleep—a common rookie mistake.
Scheduling isn’t one-size-fits-all. Experiment with what works for you and leave space for leisure activities to avoid burnout. Balance is key to surviving architecture school.
3. Build Relationships With Peers and Professors
Your professors are like your first “clients.” Understanding their preferences and standards can make a big difference in how your work is received.
Plus, they can provide invaluable feedback to sharpen your skills.
Don’t overlook your upperclassmen either—they’ve been where you are and can share tips on everything from acing certain classes to dealing with tough critiques.
Many students find these connections crucial to navigating their first year.
4. Get Involved in Organizations
Architecture school isn’t just about studying; it’s about networking as well. Joining organizations exposes you to new experiences, strengthens your teamwork skills, and opens up opportunities.
Whether it’s a college club or a national architecture group, these connections can lead to internships, mentorships, and lifelong friendships.
Consider taking on leadership roles for an even greater challenge.
5. Prioritize Your Well-Being
All-nighters and high-pressure deadlines are common in architecture, but don’t let them define your lifestyle.
Take care of your mental and physical health by sticking to a regular sleep schedule, eating well, and making time for hobbies outside of architecture.
Even simple breaks like reading a book, taking a walk, or experimenting with cooking can help recharge your creative energy. Remember, architecture school is a marathon, not a sprint.
Final Thoughts
Architecture school is tough, but with the right mindset and habits, it’s an incredible journey.
Embrace the challenges, and don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way.
You’ve got this!
